Móc, umieć or potrafić? Why doesn’t “mogę” always mean “I know how”?

In Polish, being able to do something, knowing how to do it, and having the ability to handle a particular task are related ideas — but they are not always the same.

Consider three sentences:

  • Mogę prowadzić samochód. — I can drive a car.
  • Umiem prowadzić samochód. — I know how to drive a car.
  • Potrafię prowadzić samochód. — I am capable of driving a car.

All three are natural Polish expressions. However, their communicative focus may change depending on the situation.

Imagine an experienced driver who cannot drive today because of a medical restriction.

Has the person forgotten how to drive?

Of course not.

The skill remains. The circumstances have changed.

In this Polish-language video lesson, we explore how speakers distinguish between possibility, acquired skills, and the ability to perform an action.

We also examine why umieć and potrafić often overlap in meaning. There is no need to invent rigid grammatical boundaries where natural language allows more than one expression.

The important question is not simply which word translates as “can.”

It is: What exactly do you want the other person to understand?

The same principle is examined from another perspective in Real Language Is Never Literal: meaningful communication requires more than matching words across languages.
