German Nicht vs Kein Explained: When to Use Each One

One of the most common beginner mistakes in German is confusing nicht and kein.

Both words mean “not” or “no,” but they are used in different situations.

Both sentences are correct, but the rule is different.

What Is the Difference Between Nicht and Kein?

• kein = no / not a / not any
• nicht = not

Use kein when you negate a noun.

Use nicht when you negate:

• a verb
• an adjective
• an adverb
• the whole sentence

When to Use Kein

Kein is used before nouns.

Usually, it replaces:

• ein
• eine
• any article

Examples:

• Ich habe kein Buch.
• Sie hat keine Zeit.
• Wir haben keinen Hund.
• Er trinkt keinen Kaffee.

Compare:

• Ich habe ein Auto.
• Ich habe kein Auto.

When to Use Nicht

Nicht is used when you negate the action or the whole sentence.

Examples:

• Ich komme nicht.
• Er arbeitet nicht.
• Wir lernen heute nicht.
• Sie ist nicht müde.

You also use nicht before adjectives and adverbs:

• Das ist nicht schwer.
• Er spricht nicht schnell.

Nicht with Specific Parts of the Sentence

German often uses nicht to negate only one part.

Examples:

• Ich komme nicht heute, sondern morgen.
• Sie wohnt nicht in Berlin.
• Er trinkt nicht Kaffee, sondern Tee.

In these sentences, only one detail is negated.

Where Does Nicht Go?

Usually, nicht comes:

• before adjectives
• before adverbs
• before the word you want to negate
• near the end of the sentence when it negates the whole sentence

Examples:

• Ich bin nicht müde.
• Wir fahren heute nicht nach Berlin.
• Er spricht nicht gut Deutsch.

Kein Changes Like an Article

Kein changes according to gender and case.

Examples:

• Ich sehe keinen Lehrer.
• Sie hat keine Katze.
• Wir haben kein Problem.

Incorrect:

• Sie kommt kein.
• Wir haben nicht Zeit.
