You’ve spent years studying English. You’ve mastered the present perfect, you can navigate a job interview, and you even know when to use “whom” (bravo, by the way).
Then, a native speaker sends you a text that reads:
“Hey! Wyd? I’m running late. Ttyl!”
And suddenly, you feel like you need a translator, a decoder ring, and perhaps a time machine.
Here’s the good news: You are not alone. And even better? This isn’t a new language—it’s just English in pajamas.
Today, we’re going to decode the secret world of texting acronyms. By the end of this post, you won’t just understand them—you’ll actually use them with confidence.
(And no, you won’t sound like a teenager trying too hard. I promise.)
Why Should You Bother Learning Text-Speak?
If you’re thinking, “This isn’t ‘real’ English,” think again.
Texting acronyms are the fast food of communication—quick, convenient, and everywhere. More importantly, they show emotional tone. In a text message, “Okay” sounds stiff and serious. But “Kk” sounds friendly and chill.

Let’s start with the absolute essentials. These are the ones you’ll see in 90% of English texts, DMs, and social media comments.

Level Up: The Social Media Survival Kit
Once you move past texting, you’ll need these for Instagram, Twitter (X), and TikTok.
- ICYMI (In Case You Missed It): Used when sharing old news or a post you think they haven’t seen.
- Example: “ICYMI, I posted a new blog today!”
- FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out): That anxious feeling you get when you see your friends having fun without you.
- Example: “I didn’t want to go to the party, but I had serious FOMO.”
- DM (Direct Message): A private message on social media.
- Example: “If you have a question, just slide into my DMs!” (Notice the casual verb “slide”).
- TMI (Too Much Information): Used when someone shares an embarrassing or gross detail.
- Example: “I just ate three pizzas.” — “Okay, TMI, man.”

Now, let’s put this into a real conversation. Here is a text exchange between two friends, Sarah and Mike.
Read it once, then read the translation below.
Sarah: “Hey! Wyd tonight?”
Mike: “Nm, just chilling. Hbu?”
Sarah: “Same. Wanna grab dinner? I’m craving sushi.”
Mike: “Omg, yes! But BRB, my boss is calling lol.”
Sarah: “Kk, lmk when you’re free!”
Mike: “Back! TBH, I’m starving. Where we going?”

The Translation:

Sarah: “Same. Do you want to grab dinner? I’m craving sushi.”
Mike: “Oh my god, yes! But hold on, my boss is calling (haha).”
Sarah: “Okay, let me know when you’re free!”
Mike: “I’m back! Honestly, I’m starving. Where are we going?”
Sarah: “I don’t know, that new place on 5th?”
Mike: “Perfect. See you at 7!”
Sarah: “Talk to you later! 😊”
⚠️ The Golden Rule (A Teacher’s Warning)
Before you go crazy with acronyms, remember this golden rule:
Never use these in formal situations.
- ✅ Okay to use: Friends, family, casual work chats (Slack/Teams), Instagram comments.
- ❌ Never use: Emails to your boss, university professors, job applications, or official letters.
Texting acronyms are like sweatpants—super comfortable at home, but highly inappropriate at a wedding.
